Personalised hashtags

Should you create one or not?

This is one question that I keep getting when people see my tag #socialJJ.

Personal branding on social media is all about making yourself memorable in the eyes of your community. Some remember you by your profile picture, while others notice small things like emojis, hashtags, memes, GIFs, etc.

Personalised hashtags are the best when building a solid personal brand on social media.

The three main reasons why you should create one are:

  1. Brand Identity and Recognition: Creating a personalised hashtag can significantly contribute to building and reinforcing your brand identity. It serves as a unique marker explicitly associated with your brand, making it easier for your audience to recognise and remember your content. Consistent use of this hashtag across platforms contributes to a cohesive and recognisable brand image.

  2. Community Engagement: A personalised hashtag can act as a rallying point for your community. Encouraging your audience to use the hashtag when sharing content related to your brand or participating in events fosters a sense of community. This interaction strengthens the relationship with your current audience and draws in new followers who are interested in the community you're creating.

  3. Cross-Platform Consistency: A personalised hashtag provides a consistent thread across social media platforms. Whether it's X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, or other platforms, using the same hashtag ensures that your content is easily discoverable by users across various channels. This cross-platform consistency reinforces your brand message and makes it more likely for users to find and engage with your content, regardless of the platform they prefer.

Bonus Tip: You can create events around your hashtags and increase visibility. I often host meet-ups in various cities using my personalised hashtags.

Creating a personalised hashtag involves careful consideration to ensure it aligns with your brand, is easy to remember, and encourages engagement.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to create a personalised hashtag:

  1. Define Your Purpose: Clearly understand why you want a personalised hashtag. Define its purpose to guide the creation process.

  2. Keep it Short and Simple: A good hashtag is concise and easy to remember. Avoid prolonged or complicated phrases to ensure people can readily recall and use it.

  3. Reflect Your Brand: Ensure the hashtag reflects your brand's personality and values. It should resonate with your audience and contribute positively to your brand image.

  4. Check Availability: Before finalising your hashtag, check its availability across social media platforms. Ensure it hasn't been widely used or associated with unrelated content. It should be unique to your brand.

  5. Avoid Special Characters and Spaces: Hashtags don't support spaces or special characters. Keep it simple by using letters and numbers(only if necessary). If your brand name consists of multiple words, consider capitalising the first letter of each word to improve readability.

  6. Research Existing Hashtags: Conduct a thorough search to ensure your chosen hashtag is not associated with content that could harm your brand. This step helps you avoid unintentional associations.

  7. Encourage User Participation: Ensure your hashtag is inviting and encourages user participation. It should be something your audience will find easy and enjoyable to use. Integrate a call-to-action that prompts users to engage with the hashtag.

  8. Promote Consistent Use: Once you've chosen your personalised hashtag, promote it consistently across your marketing channels. Please include it in your social media profiles, marketing materials, and all communications.

  9. Monitor and Engage: regularly monitor the usage of your personalised hashtag. Engage with users who use it and encourage further participation. This active involvement helps in building a community around your hashtag.

  10. Adapt and Evolve: Be open to adapting your hashtag strategy based on user response and brand or marketing goals changes. Don't hesitate to evolve your personalised hashtag if needed.

Remember, the success of a personalised hashtag lies not just in its creation but in how effectively you integrate it into your overall social media strategy. A well-crafted and thoughtfully implemented hashtag can become a powerful brand-building tool and community engagement tool.
